The Photo Challenge #47 – Tour Guide

I was born and raised in Bologna, Italy, and I’m crazy in love with my hometown.
Why? Because Bologna is beautiful under any weather circumstance, the red of the bricks manages to brighten up even the worst foggy day. Because it has that Medieval touch I love so much. Because its many covered walkways protect you both from the rain in winter and the hellish heat in the summer. Because when it comes to food we are not prone to counting calories and we’re definitely not afraid of body fat. And, believe me, there are at least another hundred reasons.

It’s kind of impossible to accurately describe Bologna to people who were not born here. And I’m referring not only to people born in other countries, but also to people who were born somewhere else in Italy. Bologna is a way of life, something that runs in your veins, something you can never betray.

The Photo Challenge #39 – Collage

If you ever find yourself in my hometown, Bologna (Italy), and you have a car you should definitely go visit Rocchetta Mattei. It’s a one hour trip, but it’s definitely worth it because, once you are there, you get to admire a castle so hypnotic and fantastic it seems to have just come out of who-knows-what fairytale.

Many different architectural styles, from different ages and from around the world, clash, combine and blend together like in a great collage.

And the surprises keep on coming as you continue your visit. Nothing in Rocchetta Mattei is what it seems: you think you’re seeing bricks, but you are actually looking at painted wood. You have the impression of seeing an inlaid wooden ceiling but it is actually papier-mâché. And so on.

Castell’Arquato, il borgo degli innamorati

Con il ritorno delle domeniche soleggiate, si riapre la stagione delle gite fuori porta; come sempre, alla scoperta dei borghi più belli d’Italia. Considerando che ho passato l’inverno a vagliare mete comodamente raggiungibili e visitabili in un giorno solo, partenza alla mattina e rientro prima di cena, domenica scorsa ero assolutamente entusiasta di mettermi in macchina.
Meta: Castell’Arquato, provincia di Piacenza.

Nonostante le foto sbirciate su Internet, passeggiando per il borgo sono rimasta a bocca aperta; non si può descrivere la bellezza di ritrovarsi circondati da case ed edifici risalenti al basso Medioevo, per giunta così ben conservati. Le strade ciottolate, i mattoni di tufo tempestati di antiche conchiglie fossili, i merli ghibellini, la torre viscontea alta 35 metri che da un lato s’impone sul centro del borgo, mentre dall’altro domina sulla circostante campagna piacentina; tutto richiama un’epoca lontana, che per quanto buia è sempre estramemente fascinosa.
Girovagando per Castell’Arquato è quasi impossibile non sentirsi in pace. Basta fare due respiri per assorbire un altro ritmo di vita, più lento e pacifico. E la sensazione migliora mentre si gusta un buon bicchiere di Monterosso Val D’arda dop.

Due sono le cose che mi sento di consigliarti:
1- indossa scarpe comode. Le distanze sono ridotte, ma il borgo è pieno di salite e discese e quasi tutte le strade sono vicoli acciottolati;
2- acquista il biglietto per la visita guidata, della durata di circa 70 minuti, al borgo, alla Collegiata e alla Rocca Viscontea. In poco più di un’ora avrai la possibilità di scoprire tante cose interessanti sulla storia del borgo, dal II secolo ac fino alle riprese di Ladyhawke (alcune scene sono state girate proprio lì).
